Emily Peterson, MS, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in Psychology and Interpersonal Communication. She then received her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Winona State University. Ms. Peterson takes a humanistic and holistic approach with an emphasis in empathy and authenticity in the therapeutic environment. Her clinical experience is primarily with individuals and groups working on a wide spectrum of issues including Anxiety, depression, adjustment, personality disorders, mindfulness, and relationship issues. Ms. Peterson takes an affirmative approach with LGBTQ+ folks who struggle with issues related to gender and sexuality; she finds this work especially fulfilling.
Ms. Peterson believes in maintaining a safe and collaborative environment where both the client and counselor can be their authentic selves. She aims to provide evidence-based treatments that are effective in creating noticeable change for the client. Ms. Peterson focuses on skill-building and enjoys working collaboratively with clients to achieve their goals. She also works with individuals and groups to understand how thoughts and feelings can affect behavior.
Ms. Peterson sees individuals that range in age from 14 years of age and older. Some treatments she utilizes include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Person-Centered Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Additionally, she has extensive experience working with students to obtain testing, class, and general accommodations in the college setting. Emily works closely with Dr. Kevin O’Connell at Aspirus Wausau Family Medicine for psychotherapy clients desiring Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for gender affirmation.
