We all have that moment where we feel as if life has taken its toll on us. This emotional tension or unnecessary pressure is what most of us know as stress. There are very many factors in our environment that make us feel under pressure or emotional strain. Bosses and colleagues in jobs, relatives, and neighbors at home or even personal issues such as lack of enough sleep are all possible causes of stress. Dealing with stress remains a very challenging issue because possible stressing situations are part and parcel of life.

Stress has been deemed ‘the silent killer’ and this is no surprise since it has a range of harmful effects on your body. Stress causes unnecessary pressure to your body organs and in the worst case scenario, it may lead to organ failure and eventually death. All body systems, from the nervous system to the reproductive system, are affected by stress in one way or another.

No one is immune to stress but there are strategies that will help you deal with it and therefore enhance the quality of your life. Before venturing into the strategies, you need to know that stress management has been attributed to the aversion of high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a condition that is steadily on the rise and is killing people at a very high rate now more than ever.

People deal with stress and psychological problems in life differently. There are cases of people getting into drug abuse simply because they found solace in drugs during their time of stress. Conquering stress is a quest that requires determination, persistence and time. You will have to be patient as you try to enforce the stress management strategies that will be discussed shortly.

These strategies include:

  • Avoiding stressful situations. This is one of the most effective strategies for making sure that you are not under unnecessary pressure to perform. Most stressful situations can be avoided and for those that cannot, you will have to use other management strategies.
  • Adapt to a stressor. There are those situations that cannot be avoided at any cost. In this case, you will have to adapt by either reframing the situation at hand and look at it from a positive perspective or adjusting your standards to match the situation.
  • Learn to accept things that cannot change, do not try to control the uncontrollable and learn to forgive. Gratitude and appreciation are other ways of looking at stressful situations positively and keep things in perspective.
  • Give yourself a break. Your body needs a break as well. Get enough sleep and don’t allow obligations to overwhelm you. This allows your body and mind to rest and in effect, you will be more productive and less stressed.
  • Lifestyle adaptation and exercise. A well-balanced diet and regular exercise will not only help you in stress management but will also keep you healthy and in shape. Make time for positive leisure activities that will make you happy.

With all these in mind, you rest assured of conquering stress and living a positive life.
